Sweetbay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana)

Prized for its fragrant flowers, showy conelike fruit, and smooth gray bark, Sweet Bay Magnolia can be grown as a slender tree or as a multi-stemmed shrub. It grows 30 to 50 feet tall and tolerates wet conditions, though can grow just fine in drier locations as well. Lovely, lemon-scented flowers appear mid-spring and bloom intermittently throughout the summer, followed in the fall by showy cone like fruit. When mature it can reach heights between 12 and 30 feet. Songbirds love the berries and enjoy taking a break amongst the branches.
 
Prefers full to partial sun and can be grown in zone 5-9.
