Black Oak (Quercus velutina)

Black oak is a native decidiuous tree within the red oak group family. It can be found growing in eastern and central USA from Maine to Michigan and south to Florida to Texas. It is located mainly on slopes of upland hills and ridges. It can reach a height of 50-80 feet tall. As with most oak trees, this tree supports many differnt wildlife species; including: butterflies, moths, birds, and numerous mammals. It grows best in full sun and preferes moist ot slightly acidic well drained fertile soil. Although it is adaptable to other soils as well. It is also drought and poor soil tolerant making it an excellant shade tree in parks or urban areas. 

 

Light Requirement: Full sun

Soil: moist, slightly acidic, well drained. Deep loam, clay, rocky material, or sand in moist to dry conditions.
