American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) Seeds
The American persimmon is a very sought after tree for people and wildlife alike. The tree can grow to be up to 60' tall but more commonly can be found to be around 20'. Persimmons are commonly found near forest edges, open areas, or even abandoned fields. They can be found in low bottoms within a forest but tend to get out competed by much larger and faster growing forest species. They prefer well-drained soil but can be found in a variety of conditions.
During the spring the flowers provide a rich source of nectar for wildlife and the fruit in the fall provides food to many mammals and birds. Persimmon trees are dioecious, meaning the trees produce either all female flowers or all male flowers, and both a male and female tree are needed for pollination.
This tree will tolerate hot, dry, and poor soil conditions, especially urban developement. Under poor conditions the tree may maintain a 15' shrub like appearance.
These trees are 0-1' tall.
Soil: moist, well drained, sandy soils
